Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO)

The original sewer system in the City of Belleville was constructed in 1912 as a Combined Sewer System (CSS).

A CSS is a wastewater collection system that conveys storm water and sanitary wastewater (including domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater), through a single-pipe system to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) plant.

Construction of Combined Sewer Systems was common practice when it was constructed, but they are no longer allowed under current EPA standards.
