Refuse Collection Information

Trash should be contained in trash bags, and bags should be placed inside trash containers that are in good condition with handles and detachable lids. Trash cans can be up to 45 gallons in capacity but can weigh no more that 60 pounds when filled.

Placement of containers shall not be more than five feet from the property line and must be placed out for collection by 6:00 AM the day of pick up and must be removed within 24 hours. 

No hazardous or flammable materials will be collected.

Holiday Collection

The Sanitation Department does not operate on the holidays listed below. 
If a collection day falls on or after one of the holidays listed below, the pick up for that week will be delayed by one (1) day.
Refuse must be set out for collection by 6:00 AM the day of pick up.

Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste collection occurs when the weather is permitting, but the general rule is that during January and February, yard waste will only be picked up during the second full week of each month. Beginning with the first full week of March, weekly pick up of yard waste will resume and will continue through the second full week of December.

Yard Waste is collected in two-ply Kraft paper bags or in a 32-gallon container clearly marked yard waste. Cans should have a detachable lid and no wheels. Cans and bags should weigh no more than 60 lbs. when filled. Plastic bags are not accepted.


For January – December of 2023: During the months of January and February, yard waste will be collected during the 2nd full week of each month (a full week is considered to be Monday – Friday).

  • January 2023 - Yard Waste will only be collected the week of January 9-13, 2023 

  • February 2023 - Yard Waste will only be collected the week of February 13-17, 2023

  • March – December 2023 - Weekly collection will resume during the 1st full week of March and will continue through the 2nd full week of December, specifically March 6, 2023 - December 15, 2023, weather permitting.

After December 15, 2023, there will be no yard waste collection until the 2nd full week of January, 2024

  • January 2024: January 8-12
    (2nd full week, only)
  • February 2024: February 12-16
    (2nd full week, only)

Large Item and Special Materials Collection

The city offers a large item pickup for a minimum fee of $65.00 to all residents with trash service. Additional fees are dependent upon the amount of material to be picked up. All fees must be paid in advance. 

Appliances and items requiring more then two men for lifting will not be picked up. Small amounts of home remodeling material bundled in four-feet lengths or placed in trash containers will be picked up. No concrete, bricks, or shingles will be collected. All large item collections must be scheduled with the Sanitation Department by calling 618-233-6816.  

Commercial Refuse Collection

Commercial refuse collection must be contracted out to an independent hauler unless the collection has been pre-approved by the City.

Open Burning Regulations

According to City Ordinance # 7417, all open burning in the city limits, including leaf burning, was banned as of December 16, 2011.
