New Configuration at the Belleville Public Square - Inspired by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) our new configuration at the Square seeks to provide safer and more efficient traffic flow. Traffic approaching the circle yields to traffic already in the circle. Pavement markings direct traffic into a one-way, counter-clockwise flow. This IDOT design has proven itself to save lives with a 90% reduction in fatalities, a 76% reduction in injury sustaining crashes and a 35% reduction in pedestrian sustaining injuries. All municipalities state-wide are encouraged by IDOT to adopt this round-about type design, where applicable, when reconstructing their downtown areas. Belleville is proud to have been one of the first large municipalities which partnered with IDOT to provide safer, more efficient traffic flow! MYTH: - Traffic must come to a complete stop when in the circle and allow the next vehicle into the rotation.

FALSE: - When your vehicle is in the circle you should keep moving. All other vehicles must yield to your vehicle. More problems occur behind your vehicle when your vehicle stops and interrupts the traffic flow.

50/50 Sidewalk Program

Each fiscal year monies are budgeted, and competitive construction bids taken, in order to partner with property owners to replace sidewalks that are in poor condition.  The most economical price is obtained with the City paying half and the resident paying half of the cost.  This 50/50 program has helped renovate neighborhood sidewalks across the City.  Perhaps you would like to take advantage of this program?  Why not submit a Sidewalk Replacement 50/50 Application today?
